En:Just to make things interesting, a number of the newer, big single, dirt bikes have an automatic, spring loaded, Compression Release located on the Exhaust Camshaft.
These bikes will have a normal compression pressure that is quite low, because of the Compression Release.
For example, the Kawasaki KLX650A should read 50-85 PSI. Kawasaki KLX650C is 57-87 PSI. Honda XR650R is 87 PSI with decompressor applied and 160 PSI with decompressor not applied.
Ennuhhh disclaimer...For 4-stroke engines equipped with an auto-decompression system, a "normal" compression test reading is significantly lower than the engine's actual operating compression. Because the system intentionally vents pressure during cranking, healthy engines typically register between 50 PSI and 90 PSI.
Specific ranges vary by manufacturer and model, but common benchmarks for a healthy engine with the decompressor active include:
General Range: Most modern single-cylinder dirt bikes (e.g., KTM, Honda, Yamaha) will read between 55 PSI and 85 PSI.
Honda XR650R: Approximately 87 PSI with the decompressor active (vs. ~160 PSI disabled).
Kawasaki KLX650: Specified between 50 PSI and 87 PSI.
Honda CRF450X: Often reads around 58 PSI despite having an actual operating compression of ~176 PSI.
KTM 450 SX-F: Readings around 60 PSI to 105 PSI are considered normal depending on the specific cam timing and tester consistency.
